PUERTO MONTT, Chile (AP) - Brasil, Argentina y Uruguay lograron sendas victorias el martes en la inauguración del campeonato sudamericano de básquetbol masculino.

Argentina se impuso en vibrante partido a Venezuela por 79-77, mientras el campeón defensor Brasil doblegó a Colombia 83-75. En el partido que cerró la jornada Uruguay derrotó a Chile 81-66.

Venezuela comenzó dominando, pero Argentina gradualmente equilibró las acciones apoyada en la sólida actuación del pivote Román González.

En el tercer cuarto Argentina desarrolló su mejor juego y lo cerró en ventaja 63-57.

En la parte final Venezuela presionó en toda la cancha lo que le permitió recuperar numerosos balones, a poco más de tres minutos del final se adelantó 69-67.

Pero dos canastas del González ayudaron a Argentina a aventajarse mientras Venezuela perdió tres ataques y cedió el encuentro.

El máximo anotador argentino fue González con 23 puntos y por Venezuela Oscar Torres con 20.

El campeón Brasil debió batallar para imponerse por 83-75 a Colombia en el partido inaugural.

William Drudi fue el mejor anotador de Brasil con 19 puntos, y por Colombia Edgar Moreno y Juan Londoño compartieron honores con 15 unidades cada uno.

Colombia sorprendió de entrada a los brasileños, que en el primer cuarto sólo pudieron adquirir una ventaja de 22-19.

Pero el equipo brasileño dirigido por Paulo Texeira reaccionó con una embestida a fondo, y cerró el segundo cuarto 44-31. Sin embargo, en el tercer período Colombia logró acortar la distancia a nueve puntos, 63-54.

En el cuarto decisivo, y con el apoyo ruidoso del público del Arena de esta ciudad a 1.000 kilómetros al sur de Santiago, los colombianos llegaron a estar a sólo un punto por debajo de los brasileños, 74-73.

Al final, la escuadra brasileña logró imponerse y busca seguir adelante en su defensa del título.

En el último minuto el pívot colombiano Enielsen Guevara desperdició un ataque y en la respuesta el brasileño Coloneze anotó y recibió una falta que cobró él mismo desde la línea.

El torneo se juega en esta ciudad 1.000 kilómetros al sur de Santiago en la modalidad en primera fase de todos contra todos a cuyo término el primero y segundo en la tabla de posiciones se enfrentarán por el título y los dos siguientes por el tercer y cuarto lugares.
