CARDIFF, Gales, 3 noviembre 2007 (AP) - Joe Calzaghe arrebató el domingo a Mikkel Kessler el invicto y los títulos mundiales de los supermedianos de la AMB y el CMB para unificarlos con su propia corona de la OMB al vencer al danés por decisión unánime en un emocionante combate.

El galés de 35 años, que no ha perdido en 44 peleas, tuvo tres asaltos excepcionales hacia el final del combate disputado en las primeras horas del domingo en el Millennium Stadium para unificar los tres títulos frente a 35.000 de sus fanáticos. Kessler vio su récord caer a 39-1.

Luego de una pelea de primera calidad en la que ambos púgiles intercambiaron poderosos golpes y combinaciones a lo largo de 12 asaltos, los tres jueces le dieron el triunfo claramente a Calzaghe. El norteamericano Raúl Caiz anotó la pelea 117-111, su compatriota John Stewart 116-112 y el italiano Massimo Barrovecchio 116-112.

El zurdo galés conectó con sus rectos de izquierda en el segundo asalto, pero Kessler, siete años más joven y con un certero jab, acertó con un uppercut de derecha que envió a Calzaghe a las sogas.

Los seguidores del danés corearon su nombre entre asaltos, pero la fanaticada local los acalló una vez que comenzó el tercer asalto.

Como reaccionando al derechazo, Calzaghe atacó a Kessler al inicio del tercero, volteándole con una combinación que terminó con el danés en la lona. El referí Mike Ortega dictaminó que fue un resbalón, pero la caída dio más confianza a Calzaghe, quien varió sus golpes a la cabeza y al cuerpo.

Los dos boxeadores intercambiaron combinaciones furiosas que concluyeron cuando Kessler alcanzó a Calzaghe con un par de uppercuts que le sacudieron.

Kessler conectó con unos cuantos jabs de izquierda y estremeció al galés con dos derechazos en el séptimo. Pero Calzaghe, mostrando que sus 35 años no le han debilitado, replicó con sólidas combinaciones que empujaron a Kessler por todo el cuadrilátero.

Los dos continuaron enredados a golpes, pero fue Kessler quien se vio más cansado al final de cada uno de los últimos tres asaltos y el galés tiró más puñetazos.

En un combate en la misma cartelera, el local Enzo Maccarinelli noqueó al retador Mohammed Azzaoui en el primer minuto del cuarto asalto para retener la corona crucero de la OMB.
