Con dos jonrones de Iván Rodríguez Puerto Rico apalea a Panamá

SAN JUAN, 7 marzo 2009 (AP) - Un fiero ataque de 13 hits permitió el sábado que Puerto Rico apabullara 7-0 a Panamá en el Clásico Mundial de Béisbol.

Los boricuas cumplieron la expectativa de su primer compromiso, como uno de los favoritos del grupo, ante alrededor de 20.000 personas que se congregaron en el estadio Hiram Bithorn.

El abridor Javier Vázquez (1-0) permitió tres de los cuatro hits panameños y fue relevado efectivamente por Nelson Figueroa y Saúl Rivera, que mostraron gran dominio de sus lanzamientos.

Las primeras dos anotaciones de los anfitriones fueron cuadrangulares cortesía de Carlos Delgado e Iván Rodríguez en la segunda y cuarta entrada, respectivamente, batazos que pusieron a delirar a la fanaticada local.

En la quinta entrada, Mike Avilés se embasó por error del campo corto en el tiro a primera y llegó a tercera por otro error del inicialista Julio Zuleta en el recibo de un tiro del lanzador. Luego anotó impulsado por batazo al jardín central de Ramón Vázquez.


Un episodio más tarde, la artillería boricua se dejó sentir nuevamente con dobles consecutivos de Rodríguez y Geovanny Soto que produjeron una carrera adicional. Luego de eso, Puerto Rico acomodó hombres en todas las bases, pero se quedaron esperando remolque cuando Ramón Vázquez se ponchó.

Rodríguez volvió a volar la cerca en la séptima entrada con dos compañeros a bordo.

Puerto Rico llenó las bases de nuevo en la parte baja de la octava entrada con sencillos de Carlos Beltrán, Delgado y boleto a Rodríguez, pero Soto falló en empujarlos con un bombo al jardín derecho.

El relevista Carlos Gutiérrez se encargó de cerrar la novena para los locales ponchando al receptor panameño Carlos Ruiz.

Bruce Chen (0-1) cargó con la derrota.

Panamá se mide con República Dominicana el domingo, partido entre perdedores de la jornada sabatina, mientras que Puerto Rico se enfrentará con Holanda el lunes en encuentro entre ganadores de la primera jornada.
