Cotto vs. Margarito será en Las Vegas

(AP) - Miguel Cotto, monarca invicto de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, estará por primera vez en una pelea estelar en Las Vegas cuando se enfrente a Antonio Margarito, campeón de la Federación Internacional de Boxeo, en el hotel MGM Grand, dijo una persona allegada a la decisión que habló a condición del anonimato debido a que el acuerdo consumado no será anunciado hasta la semana próxima.

Pero el debut del astro de la división welter como una atracción en la televisión de pago por evento está dando a la función de julio el carácter de la pelea más atractiva del verano.

El promotor Bob Arum dijo recientemente que estaba interesado en montar la pelea en Las Vegas para presentar a Cotto ante nuevos espectadores al tiempo que también halaga a los mexicano-estadounidenses de California que siguen a Margarito. Asimismo, Arum considera que el combate en Las Vegas tendrá una mejor venta en la televisión de pago por evento.

Margarito (36-5, 26 nocauts) consiguió la posibilidad de enfrentar a Cotto cuando arrebató el título de la FIB al puertorriqueño Kermit Cintrón por nocaut en el sexto asalto el 12 de abril, momentos antes de que Botto derrotara al mexicano Alfonso Gómez en la misma función en Atlantic City. Margarito, quien perdió el título welter de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo ante Paul Williams el año pasado, dominó a Cintrón por segunda vez en su carrera y tuvo la oportunidad de buscar otro cinturón.

La pegada poderosa y la tenacidad de Cotto lo han convertido en la amenaza principal para el campeón welter del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo, Floyd Mayweather Jr., considerado por expertos como el mejor peleador libra por libra de la actualidad. Pero por ahora el monarca del CMB está más interesado en los programas televisivos de realidad simulada y en los espectáculos con grandes bolsas en lugar de los peligros de una pelea con Cotto.
