QUITO (AP) - Ecuador superó el domingo a Chile por 1-0 gracias a un potente cabezazo de Cristian Benítez, para escalar una posición en las aspiraciones por clasificar al mundial de Sudáfrica 2010.
Chile, que ahora sólo tiene un punto de ventaja sobre Ecuador, desplegó un juego ordenado pero no pudo llegar con peligro real al arco rival y terminó el cotejo con nueve jugadores por la expulsión de Ismael Fuentes y Gonzalo Jara.

Ecuador rebasó a Colombia en la tabla y se ubicó sexto al sumar 12 puntos, debajo de Uruguay sólo por la diferencia de goles. Chile se mantiene en el cuarto lugar con 13 unidades.
Tras una larga espera y reiteradas oportunidades fallidas, el atacante ecuatoriano, que brilla en el Monterrey mexicano, abrió el marcador a los 73 minutos con un potente golpe de cabeza que incrustó el balón en el arco de Carlos Bravo, tras un tiro de esquina de Wálter Ayoví.
Benítez, clave en el triunfo ecuatoriano, será baja ante Venezuela en el partido del miércoles por acumulación de tarjetas, luego de ganarse una amonestación tras celebrar su gol sacándose la camiseta.
El artillero ecuatoriano fue una amenaza constante en el arco rival junto a su compañero Felipe Caicedo quien milita en el Manchester City. En varias ocasiones, el portero Bravo se convirtió en el salvador de su equipo con certeras intervenciones.
Los ecuatorianos, dirigidos por Sixto Vizuete, arrancaron el primer tiempo con una clara oportunidad de gol que perdió Caicedo, pero el juego de los locales careció de precisión en sus salidas frente al ímpetu de los chilenos que buscaron bloquear el ataque de sus rivales.
La selección chilena, al mando del argentino Marcelo Bielsa, había entrado toda la semana en Quito como estrategia para contrarrestar los 2.850 metros de altura de la capital ecuatoriana. Sin embargo, perdió a su primer hombre a los 19 minutos, cuando el árbitro paraguayo Martín Vázquez decretó tarjeta roja para Ismael Fuentes por una falta por detrás sobre Joffre Guerrón.
El segundo hombre expulsado del campo fue el chileno Gonzalo Jara al acumular su segunda tarjeta amarilla a los 82 por una falta sobre Patricio Urrutia.
El conjunto tricolor aprovechó la ventaja y paulatinamente dejó sentir el peligro que rondaba a los araucanos al acercarse en al menos siete ocasiones al arco de Bravo, aunque sin éxito.
El primer tiempo concluyó con un claro dominio local en el que el portero Elizaga permaneció como espectador ante las pocas llegadas rivales, pese a ello destacó por el conjunto chileno la actuación del atacante Humberto Suazo.
La segunda fase no varió debido a las insistentes posibilidades de los ecuatorianos que arrancaron nuevamente con el delantero Caicedo, seguido de un fallido tiro libre de Bolaños, quien entró a reemplazar a Paúl Ambrossi, hasta un frustrado avance de Crisitan Benítez.
A los 89, el portero ecuatoriano Elizaga salvó el único intento claro del conjunto chileno por intermedio de Mark González.
Para el partido contra Venezuela, además de Benítez, estarán ausentes Antonio Valencia e Iván Hurtado mientras que el volante Edison Méndez y el arquero José Francisco Cevallos retornarán a la titularidad.
