TAMPA, Florida, EE.UU. (AP) - Hank Steinbrenner insiste en que el béisbol ha sido señalado por sus problemas por el consumo de sustancias que mejoran el rendimiento deportivo, y asegura que el problema es más grande en el fútbol estadounidense.

"Todos los que saben de departes saben que el fútbol estadounidense está hecho a la medida para el consumo de sustancias para mejorar el rendimiento. No sé cómo lograron liberarse de la atención. Eso me molesta y no me digan que esto no está extendido, el número de casos en el fútbol estadounidense es por lo menos el doble. Vean el tamaño y la velocidad de esos jugadores", agregó.

Por su parte, el vocero de la NFL, Greg Aiello, indicó que "hemos tenido pruebas al azar durante todo el año con suspensiones inmediatas desde 1990 y llevamos a cabo unas 12.000 pruebas para detectar esteroides al año".

Los comentarios de Steinbrenner llegaron poco después de que el lanzador Andy Pettitte se disculpó por primera vez desde que su nombre fue mencionado en el Reporte Mitchell.

Dos días después de que el informe sea dado a conocer en diciembre, Pettitte confirmó que utilizó hormona del crecimiento humano en el 2002; hace dos semanas, dijo a los investigadores del Congreso que también consumió la hormona por un día en el 2004.
