Rafal Nadal no jugará en Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, Inglaterra (AP) - El tenista español Rafael Nadal anunció el viernes que no defenderá su título en Wimbledon.

El español es el primer campeón de la rama masculina de Wimbledon que no defiende su corona desde Goran Ivanisevic en 2002, y apenas el segundo en los 35 últimos años.

El torneo en las canchas de césped del All England Club comienza el lunes.

"Sencillamente no estoy al 100 por ciento", dijo el número uno del mundo en una rueda de prensa. "Estoy mejor que hace un par de semanas, pero simplemente no me siento listo".

Su anuncio fue unas dos horas y media después de caer ante Stanislas Wawrinka en una exhibición en el césped del Hurlingham Club en el sur de Londres. Nadal también perdió otro fogueo el jueves contra Lleyton Hewitt.

Nadal no juega un partido oficial desde el 31 de mayo, cuando fue eliminado por Robin Soderling en la cuarta ronda del Abierto de Francia, donde buscaba su quinto título consecutivo.

Después anunció su retiro del torneo Queen's Club, un tradicional fogueo para Wimbledon, y viajó a Barcelona para someterse a exámenes médicos en las rodillas.

"Creo que he llegado al límite. Necesito empezar de nuevo para volver más fuerte", indicó Nadal.

Nadal sufrió el mismo problema el año pasado y en noviembre se perdió la final de la Copa Davis entre España y Argentina, que ganó el equipo europeo en Mar del Plata.

Nadal ganó el título de Wimbledon el año pasado en una épica final a cinco sets contra el suizo Roger Federer, que ahora tiene el camino allanado para conseguir su 15to título de Grand Slam
