MANAGUA (AP) - El tricampeón mundial de boxeo y alcalde de Managua, Alexis Argüello, fue hallado muerto el miércoles, informó la Secretaría de Información y Ciudadanía de Nicaragua. Tenía 57 años.

1985-1986: The former boxing world champion Alexis Argï¿½ello is dead. Argï¿½ello was found dead in its house in Nicaragua, communicated the local authorities. The 57 old was last also a mayor of Nicaragua capital Managua.

No se dio oficialmente la causa de muerte, aunque según diversos informes de prensa se trató de un suicidio. El diario La Prensa reportó que Argüello tenía una herida de bala en el pecho.

La emisora sandinista Radio Ya indicó que el cadáver fue encontrado en la madrugada del miércoles y fue llevado al Instituto de Medicina Legal para la autopsia.

Argüello fue electo alcalde de Managua en las elecciones municipales de noviembre pasado.

"Estamos consternados. Lo anuncio con dolor en el corazón. Era al campeón de los pobres. Un ejemplo de perdón y reconciliación", dijo la vocero presidencial y esposa del presidente Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo.

"Era de un espíritu ejemplar y un ejemplo de nuestra juventud", agregó.

Murillo informó que Ortega suspendió su viaje a Panamá a la toma de posesión del nuevo presidente de ese país, Ricardo Martinelli.

Alexis Argüello

El ex púgil había regresado el domingo de Puerto Rico, adonde viajó para estrechar lazos deportivos y culturales con las autoridades de la isla y rendir homenaje a la leyenda boricua del béisbol, Roberto Clemente.

En Puerto Rico protagonizó el 28 de enero de 1978 uno de sus más famosos combates contra el boricua Alfredo Escalera, al que le ganó el título súper pluma del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo con un nocaut en 13 asaltos.

Argüello, conocido como "El Flaco Explosivo" por su fuerte pegada y espigada figura, fue campeón del peso pluma entre 1974-77, del peso junior ligero entre 1978-80, y del peso ligero de 1981-83.

Argüello se retiró del cuadrilátero con récord de 82-8, con 65 triunfos por la vía rápida. En 1992 fue exaltado al Salón de la Fama del Boxeo.

En 1999, The Associated Press lo eligió como el mejor boxeador en la historia del peso junior ligero.

El año pasado, el boxeador fue el abanderado de la delegación de Nicaragua en los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing.

Argüellonació el 19 de abril de 1952 en un barrio pobre de Managua e incursionó en el boxeo en 1968. El 16 de febrero de 1974 peleó por su primer título mundial, el del peso pluma de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, pero cayó en una decisión unánime contra el panameño Ernesto Marcel.

El 23 de noviembre del mismo año ganó su primera corona en el peso pluma al noquear en 13 asaltos al mexicano Rubén Olivares en Los Angeles.

Argüello ganó su segundo campeonato en el peso junior ligero contra Escalera, en una sangrienta reyerta en Bayamón, ciudad contigua a San Juan.

El 20 de junio de 1981 logró el campeonato del peso ligero en Londres con una decisión unánime sobre el británico Jim Watt.

Argüello buscó en dos ocasiones el título junior welter contra el estadounidense Aaron Pryor, quien lo venció con dos brutales nocauts en 14 y 10 asaltos en 1982 y 1983, respectivamente.

Colgó los guantes después de su segundo revés contra Pryor, pero luego regresó al ring para una pelea en 1985, otra en 1986, 1994 y 1995. Su último combate fue el 21 de enero de 1995 en Las Vegas, una derrota por decisión unánime contra el desconocido Scott Walker.

Argüello luchó contra los Sandinistas en la década de los 1980, pero luego se unió al partido y ganó la elección para alcalde de la capital en 2008.

En uno de sus últimos actos públicos, Argüello estuvo el viernes pasado en Puerto Rico y visitó la ciudad deportiva que lleva el nombre de Roberto Clemente, quien falleció el 31 de diciembre de 1972 en un accidente aéreo mientras llevaba ayuda a las víctimas de un terremoto en Managua.

"Como Clemente no ha nacido otro. Lo recordaremos siempre porque dio su vida por nuestro país. Clemente es uno de los lazos que unen a Nicaragua con Puerto Rico", dijo Argüello la semana pasada.

Independientemente de su afiliacion politica Alexis era y seguira siendo un idolo para todos los nicas y muchos latinos. Gracias a todos los latinos por su apoyo y en especial a los boricuas por guererlo como uno de los suyos.Vamos a Coto.
